731. Greek Baked Fish
As I’ve only started cooking fish in the last couple of years, I’m still nowhere near as confident with cooking it as I am with most other kinds of foods. That means I’m often on the lookout for easy and tasty new recipes to try. This Greek fish dish involves making a ratatouille-like mixture of onions, peppers and tomatoes, placing the fish on top, drizzling white wine over the whole thing and then baking it in the oven. The results weren’t perfect - the veggies could have been sweeter for a start, but it was promising enough that I would definitely try making it again and improving it.

638. Sole a la Meuniere
Sole a la Meuniere is a really simple fish dish which involves a pan-fried sole fillet topped with a white wine, butter and parsley sauce which you very quickly whip up in the pan you cook the fish in. This meal didn’t get off to the greatest of starts as I opened up the fish which I’d bought the day before only to find it smelled really bad. I had to take it back to the store and get some new fish, by which time I was over-hungry and hated fish and didn’t even want to eat it any more. As a result, I ended up thinking it was just ok. I think if I’d cooked it without all the drama it would have tasted much better though!

628. Yakisoba
Occasionally Pie and I order sushi. It tends to be much rarer and much more of a treat than ordering other takeout because it’s that much more expensive. I only first tried sushi a few years ago but I’ve grown to love it. I do find though that I can’t eat a whole big meal of just sushi, and I prefer to have a few pieces followed by some noodles or another hot dish (more like how they actually eat it in Japan). On this occasion I went for the chicken yakisoba. Normally if I’m having Japanese food I’ll go for either katsu curry or ramen, but these yakisoba were definitely a good alternative - kind of like a Japanese version of chow mein (and I’m never going to complain about chow mein).
629. Sea Urchin and 630. Wakame
This restaurant had a pretty good sushi selection so we picked a couple of more unusual items like the sea urchin and wakame nigiris. I knew that sea urchin is considered a real delicacy so I was pretty excited to try it. I’m still not sure whether I liked it or not though. It didn’t taste like fish, really I can’t describe it any more accurately that saying it tasted like sea smell. You know when you go to the beach and there’s that aroma of salt and sand? Yeah, just exactly like that. It was strange, but I would try it again for sure. The wakame is a type of Japanese seaweed. I didn’t find that it tasted of all that much, it was just bland with a slimy texture and I wouldn’t bother ordering it again.

599. Marsh Samphire
These were the tilapia fillets that I had for my main course. They came with a buttery, orange sauce, and some marsh samphire. Samphire is something I only had for the first time recently, but it’s one of those foods that as soon as you taste it you realise you’ve been missing out on a lot by not trying it all this time. It tastes like a vegetable, but a salty, nutty vegetable.

598. Sardines
Before I moved to Cardiff, my dad and I went to Loch Fyne to test out their lunch deal. You get two courses for £10 from a limited menu and it was amazing value. I started off with a chicken parfait, whilst my dad had these sardines, and then we both had tilapia for the main.
I’ve always avoided sardines as I don’t like any kind of oily fish, and I hate canned fish so I was really not tempted to try that at all. As these were fresh though, and from a good fish restaurant I figured it would be a good time to give them a try. Let’s just say I was very glad I didn’t order them myself. The fishy taste was so strong, it was really unpleasant, but worse than that they had this weird texture that almost felt kind of hairy. I did not enjoy them at all!

574. Cockles
I knew as soon as we decided to go to Whitby that I would have to face one of my most-dreaded items from the list. Cockles were already on my dubious list because I’m still introducing myself to shellfish, but then add to that the fact that they look like a snail, and worst of all they’re cold (cold seafood is NEVER right) and it all adds up to something wholly unappealing. It didn’t help that when I saw them they looked gross too (I mean come on, look at the picture, that looks like a bit of another food that you would throw away), but the whole point of this list is that I try to be open minded and give things ago rather than judging them purely on what they are/look like. As it turns out though in this case I was totally right, they were chewy, and sandy, and just plain bad. I think that perhaps if they were treated like clams and put in a chowder or pasta then I could just about accept them, but I shall certainly not be eating them like this again. As a special treat here is a picture of my reaction after eating it.

573. Fish Pie
This was a very fancy fish pie. It was packed with fish and came with these cute little mussels sticking out the top. Fish pie is definitely one of my favourite fish dishes - mostly because I’m in love with any kind of mashed-potato-topped pie, and also because fish pie usually has smoked haddock in it and smoked haddock is pretty damn awesome. In fact I would happily make a fish pie out of nothing but smoked haddock and eggs and forget all the other fishes altogether.

562. Boquerones Fritos
First off, let me apologise for this truly heinous photo. The restaurant was dark and I only had my phone and I mean, I like my Blackberry, but if you have to take a picture on it in low light it could not suck any more. I would have been better off trying to do an impromptu painting in the middle of dinner.
I like tapas because it allows you to try a lot of foods that you would normally avoid because you don’t want to have to commit to a whole meal of. This totally applied in this case because I would never in a million years ordered a plate of boquerones fritos (which are fried anchovies) for myself. I don’t like anchovies normally, let alone ones with the heads and skins still left on. So I just had the one. It was even worse than I imagined (if that’s actually possible), and I pretty much felt like I was going to throw up on the table. I returned to my tasty tasty patatas bravas and all was right with the world again. Just glad I got this one over with and I can move on to some more nice foods!

545. Moules Marinieres
Now you may think these mussels are from Bruges too, it would seem logical, moules is pretty much the quintessential Belgian dish (well, other than waffles, and chocolates, and beer… ok so Belgium has a lot of famous foods). But no, these moules were actually eaten in Tufnell Park in North London, at an Italian restaurant. It doesn’t make much sense, but hey, I take the opportunity to try foods from the list whenever I can.
Personally I don’t really ‘get’ what the big deal is with mussels. They always seem to be one of those foods where people adore them and obsess over them. I like them, I think they taste ok, sometimes they can even taste good (like when they’re in a spicy coconutty kind of broth, those are good), but I really don’t find them to be anything amazing, and when you combine that with having to make a big effort for a tiny piece of food I just can’t be bothered. Maybe I’m just a lazy eater.

536. Dover Sole
When I was in Bruges we had lunch at one of the restaurants on the square. It was a restaurant I’d visited before in Bruges. It has good food, a good lunch deal and a good view of everyone passing by, so there’s not a lot more you could ask for! I had the waterzooi, which I’ve already posted, and my friend Pie had this delicious-looking plate of dover sole. The fish was light and delicate and flaky. One of my favourite fish is lemon sole, so it was not really surprising that I enjoyed it’s cousin.
537. Pommes Frites
The fish came with a big serving of pommes frites. I’ve had fries a bunch of times since starting the list, but I wanted to wait until I went to Belgium and had the authentic original ones before I posted on the list. Belgian fries are crisp and crunchy and always full of flavour. Plus they often come served with mayonnaise which I am never going to complain about!
