788. Chinese Sausage and 789. XO Sauce
Let me start with the good parts about this meal:
It had a fried egg. You can never go wrong with a fried egg.
It introduced me to Maggi sweet chilli sauce which is a pretty nice condiment
And now lets go to the bad:
Chinese sausage
XO sauce
It’s been a while since I properly disliked something I tried for this blog, but on this occasion I had a double whammy. I picked up both of these things on a recent trip to the Chinese supermarket and I was excited to try them as it’s always fun to try authentic foods that you can find in ethnic stores. The Chinese sausage basically just tasted like fat to me, and was beyond chewy. I’m not always the biggest fan of cured sausagey type things, and these just embodied everything I dislike about them (on the other hand I recently picked up some various German salamis at the Cardiff Harbour Festival which were delicious). The XO sauce smelt unappetising as soon as I opened the jar; it was very strongly fishy which I always find really offputting. I purposely used a very small amount (a couple of teaspoons in the whole 2 portions of fried rice) but the flavour still permeated everything. I assumed it would be like fish sauce which smells odd but just tastes salty and savoury when mixed into things, but sadly that was not the case here.
